After a long time this September will be an interesting month
for all of us Bollywood buffs. I would want to add the last release date of 31st
August too to this interesting unfolding scenario. Off late bollywood has been
wedded to high level promotions and big stars riding big name duds. This month
changes all that starting 31st
August to 30th September we have an array of movies which are
totally driven on content. None of them has a single today’s superstar. Sure
some of them have done great work in the past but this is like them trying to
redeem themselves or telling us they have some fire power left in them. What
makes this month extremely nail bitingly interesting is that all these movies
drive themselves on a unique content theme or a content theme which is an old
trusted weapon like comedy. However make no mistake all these movies will hope
that the content clicks and their movies work on word of mouth. Now ask
yourself when did this happen last in Bollywood. You will have to go back to
way back into dates like 2008 and 2007 since then Bollywood had become Khans,
Kumars and Hype based industry.
You can look at some of these dark horses here
Stree
– This one
is a horror comedy which has a tinge of romance in it. Rajkumar Rao and Pankaj
Tripathi with Shraddha Kapoor add to the star power of this movie. Now given
that all of them are not heavy duty the trailer has caught on big time on
internet and given that in its background is a true incident which took place
in Telangana a few years back this one is sure a dark horse
Yamla
Pagla Deewana Phir Se – Contrary to the purist media’s stand the three
deols together have driven good box office numbers. Yamla Pagla Deewana brings
back the same whacky comedy aura and the attitude to laugh at their own selves
from the Deols. This one could be a big winner given not much competition in
September.
Manmarziyan
– Anurag
Kashyap is going back to what made him popular – telling dark love stories.
Fact is popular eye caught him when he gave us the dark and racy DevD. For a
lot many this is not Anurag Kashyap’s forte and I can say with some confidence
that Manmarziyan could get Anurag the much needed Box Office glory –even Mukkabaaz’s
better moments were when the love story was unfolding. This could also be
Abhishek Bachchan’s redemption but make no mistake in this movie too content is
supreme
Batti
Gul Meter Chalu – If I had to place my bet on one movie that
could surprise us with its box office victory it is this movie. It is helmed by
Shree Narayan Singh who gave us the social super hit called Toilet Ek Prem
Katha and here too he touches a raw nerve through the trailer about the
corruption in power departments of India. This one has a tinge of retribution
in the content and the lucky mascot of all revenge movies is in this one too
namely Shraddha Kapoor, you just have to look at the numbers of Ek Villain and
Baaghi to understand what I am saying.
Sui
Dhaaga – Each time Yashraj films hits a low phase they have revived
themselves by fresh content cinema. Some of their recent better wins have been
in movies like Dum Laga ke Haisha and Hichki. This one has created a buzz in
the multiplex audiences and Anushka getting trolled for her crying will only
add to the buzz. The trailer does promise a rich content of small town dreams.
This one could win big.
Paltan
– A lot
many are saying that Paltan looks like Border reloaded and this is where they
are so wrong and this is where we get our heartland and mass cinema totally off
the radar. Fact is the story of Nathula 1967 is not known to many Indians. This
is a story where a new confident stood to the tyranny of the Chinese Dragon.
Sometimes stories of Valour are enough to ride into hearts of audiences even if
scenes or screenplay looks forced to the purists – you need to look at the
numbers Parmanu made without any media or hype support.
Come September. Week after week. We will see a battle of
content. Am riding into theaters every Friday for sure.
